Scholar's Ward
Media: India Ink, Compressed Charcoal, & Vine Charcoal on paper
I illustrated this piece in February 2016 to fulfill my final assignment for the Studio Art Figure Drawing course at College. I drew inspiration primarily from the aesthetics and mystique of Bethesda Softworks's video game series The Elder Scrolls. This piece depicts a student of arcane arts conjuring a shield of mystical energy with the slight apprehension of a young initiate. Despite the trepidation reflected in the student's posture they tread carefully onward with a steadfast forward gaze.
This illustration represents one of my earliest experimental attempts at using India Ink as the primary material. At this point in time I was much more familiar with the use of charcoal, particularly in representing gradients of light and shadow. Though I employed charcoal to produce the finer shadows about the scholar's face, I also used hatching patterns of relatively broad brush strokes along folds of clothing as well as variations of concentration in placement in the shimmering background pattern of the mystical ward to illustrate precise gradations of darkness and light.
