Excerpt
JULIETTE pulls REX upright and with difficulty he relinquishes SHARON's hand. JULIETTE trembles and REX stands paralyzed with emotion, his arm still outstretched and his mouth slightly agape in a pained expression as the MEDICAL TECHNICIANS wheel SHARON's bed out of the room.
JULIETTE leans her back against the wall next to the window and holds both palms to her temples. REX leans his back against the adjacent wall and slowly slips down until he is sitting on the floor with his knees tucked up to his chest and his head in his hand.
REX
Do you think she'll make it?
JULIETTE doesn't respond.
REX
Julie, do you think she'll make it?
JULIETTE
She stopped breathing Rex, I don't know what to say.
REX
She was still breathing when they took her out, I swear she was. I think she was, wasn't she?
JULIETTE lifts her head and looks at REX with a pained and helpless expression.
REX
I'm going to the ICU.
JULIETTE
Don't honey, it's too late. We should just--
REX
(shouting)
I have to stay with her!
JULIETTE kneels beside REX and wipes a trickling tear from his face then embraces him.
REX fishes in his pocket then hands JULIETTE a set of car keys.
REX
Don't tell the kids about today when you pick them up.
JULIETTE
I won't.
JULIETTE stands and extends her arm to caress the side of REX's face.
JULIETTE
I'm sorry, Rex.
JULIETTE's hand falls limply to her side. She exits.
